The Marangu Route, commonly known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” is the most established and traditional route to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. It is the only route that offers hut accommodation, making it a popular choice for climbers who prefer more comfort compared to camping routes.
The trek starts at Marangu Gate, passing through lush rainforest before transitioning into moorland and alpine desert landscapes. Climbers stay overnight in mountain huts—Mandara Hut, Horombo Hut, and Kibo Hut—which provide basic shelter and communal dining areas.
From Kibo Hut, climbers begin the final ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) shortly after midnight, reaching the summit at sunrise. After enjoying views from the highest point in Africa, the descent follows the same Marangu Route back to the gate.
Typically completed in 5 or 6 days, the Marangu Route is considered the easiest path in terms of trail navigation; however, its shorter duration allows less time for acclimatization compared to other routes. A 6-day itinerary is strongly recommended to improve summit success and reduce the risk of altitude sickness.
The Marangu Route is ideal for climbers seeking a classic Kilimanjaro experience, hut accommodations, and a well-defined trail.
