KILIMANJARO RONGAI ROUTE

ABOUT RONGAI ROUTE

The Rongai Route is the only Kilimanjaro route that approaches the mountain from the northern side, near the Kenya–Tanzania border. Known for its remote and quieter trails, this route offers a more peaceful climbing experience and is ideal for those seeking solitude and unspoiled wilderness.
The trek begins at Rongai Gate, passing through farmland and sparse forest before entering moorland and alpine desert zones. Due to its gradual ascent, the Rongai Route is considered one of the easier routes physically, making it suitable for climbers who prefer a steady and less crowded climb.
As the route progresses, climbers enjoy expansive views of the northern plains and Mawenzi Peak. The summit attempt follows the Kibo Route, leading to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. The descent is made via the Marangu Route, providing a different perspective of the mountain.
Typically completed in 6 or 7 days, the Rongai Route offers good acclimatization, especially on longer itineraries. It is also a popular choice during the rainy seasons, as the northern slopes receive less rainfall compared to other routes.
The Rongai Route is ideal for climbers looking for a quiet, scenic, and gradual ascent with a high chance of success.
