The Northern Circuit Route is the longest and most comprehensive route on Mount Kilimanjaro, offering unmatched acclimatization and the highest summit success rate of all routes. Approaching the mountain from the west and circling around the remote northern slopes, this route is ideal for climbers who prioritize safety, scenery, and a quieter trekking experience.
The trek begins at Lemosho Gate, passing through lush rainforest before ascending onto the Shira Plateau. From there, the route diverges northward, traversing the seldom-visited northern side of the mountain with panoramic views of the Kenyan plains, Kibo Peak, and the rugged northern valleys.
Climbers experience diverse ecosystems—from rainforest and moorland to alpine desert—while benefiting from a slow, steady ascent that greatly reduces the risk of altitude sickness. The route later joins the eastern side of the mountain, continuing through Kibo area before the final summit push to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Descent is via the Mweka Route.
Typically completed in 8 or 9 days, the Northern Circuit provides excellent acclimatization time and minimal crowding, making it the best choice for climbers seeking a high success rate, stunning scenery, and a premium Kilimanjaro experience.
